Beautiful Beaufort Coastal Journey
March 27th – 29th, 2018
Beaufort has recently been named the most beautiful place to visit in South Carolina by Conde Nast Traveler magazine and is one of Southern Livings’ Best Small Towns. I think that means it’s time to visit! Situated on the shores of the Beaufort River, the charming waterfront downtown boasts lovely shops, historic districts, Old English style homes, moss-draped oak trees, restaurants, a marina, and much more. It is the second oldest city in South Carolina, and can be described as a cross between Charleston and Savannah, minus the crowds and motorcoaches. It also has a unique military history, as Parris Island is just around the corner, so to speak. When we visit we have a terrific city tour planned with a step on guide. They will point out all the lovely historic sites, speak to us about its lovely location on Port Royal Island, and talk to us about how Hollywood has filmed some of their biggest hits here, including Forest Gump and The Big Chill. With this 300-year-old history to learn about, we will take in a carriage ride thru the lovely narrow streets of the city, all the while learning about what makes this area so special. You’ll have some free time to take in the waterfront shops along Bay Street and walk in the Waterfront Park if you’d like. We’ll also learn about the history of Penn Center on St. Helena Island where the first school for freed slaves was located and where Martin Luther King penned his ‘I have a dream’ speech. A trip to this area wouldn’t be complete without a short movie location tour too! Novelist Pat Conroy is from this area, so you’ll see sites where his book, The Prince of Tides, was made into a movie. While in the area, we will also go out to the barrier island and see the lighthouse at Hunting Island State Park. You might even want to climb to the top of the lighthouse too! This lovely secluded area features a beach right out of a magazine with its natural looking shorelines and undeveloped park. Of course, a trip to the coast will include some great seafood too! And one last thing……they make Kazoo’s here! Yep – we will visit the Kazoobie Kazoos and make our own Kazoo to take home! This trip will be delightful with it’s beautiful location, natural beaches, charming downtown, and so much more! You just can’t miss this little gem of a trip!!
