Discovering the Bluegrass of Kentucky Tour

Discovering the Bluegrass of Kentucky Tour

October 22-25, 2024

Includes a wonderful experience at the famous Keeneland Horse Racing Track during their fall meet.

You will be thrilled to visit this amazing state which is full of history, beautiful scenery, small towns, bluegrass and thoroughbred horse racing!  We’ll be staying in the heart of it all at the Hyatt Place in Lexington.  We’ll travel there with an included stop at the Kentucky Artisan Center where you can browse for handmade items from Kentucky artists.   It’s an incredible building and makes for a perfect stop in route.  Next up is Lexington!  Our hotel is centrally located and features an included hot breakfast each morning and light bites in their restaurant on your own in the evening.  There are also several restaurants within walking distance too.  The following day we’re off to explore!

While out we will travel along the pretty farmlands that grace this area.   You’ll soon learn why it’s called the Bluegrass State.  Our first stop will be at Old Friends, a retirement farm for race horses.  You’ll see some familiar names and learn how this remarkable place came to be.  These animals are treated like royalty here and you will be able to get up close with the horses. It’s a wonderful stop.  From there it’s time to head to the races!  We are off to Keeneland to enjoy a day of horse racing.  Celebrating over 8 decades in Lexington, it is a truly incredible place.  While there you will see the paddock area, grounds, and have access to the trackside area as well.  Can’t say enough about how beautiful this storied track is.  The real highlight is our time in the Phoenix Room.   You’ll have VIP passes here and will have full access to an incredible buffet that is served throughout the day.  This area overlooks the Paddocks, so you can see the horses come in between races.  You can also stay at your table throughout the day as it is reserved just for you!  There is table service for drinks, a betting area where you can place you wagers on the races throughout the day, and you can go just outside the doors to view the races or watch them on the big screens.  You also have access to all areas of the track and just down the elevator is an incredible gift shop.   You will LOVE this experience!  It’s the perfect spot, even if don’t bet on the ponies!  It’s great fun and you get wrapped up in it as you read about the horses in the included program.

The next day we’re off to explore!  We’ll be taking the backroads to the charming town of Bloomfield.  It’s here that a local made good on his promise to bring his hometown back to life.  While there you can have lunch at Ernie’s Tavern and I encourage you to google it!  It’s like a Hollywood movie set from the 30’s and 40’s; or a page out of American Pickers!  It’s absolutely fun with a soda fountain, bowling lanes, arcade games, a lunch counter and full sit-down restaurant too.  On the same street there are lovely antique stores that are worth the visit, a tea room, a saloon, and other great stops.  You truly won’t believe it all till you see it. Next up is Bardstown, the bourbon capital of the state.  We’ll make a stop at Bardstown Bourbon, which is a state of the art, modern place. You can slip on a flight of 4 bourbons, or enjoy a handmade cocktail OR, a mocktail of your choice.  There are plenty of great places to relax here with great indoor and outdoor seating area.  It’s truly the way to enjoy a sip or two!  We’ll return to Lexington for the evening and enjoy dinner out together at a local restaurant.  On the following day, we will head back to Georgia and you’ll have a new appreciation for the Bluegrass State!
